In conjunction with the Grammy Museum’s new exhibition Hip Hop: A Cultural Odyssey, Dig presents new hip hop photographs by Lawrence Watson. Our favourite is this shot of Eric B and Chuck D. Lawrence was a staff photographer at NME and was dispatched to New York to shoot the stars of the burgeoning hip hop scene. This shot was taken on the Bowery outside the offices of Def Jam, in the shadow of the infamous CBGB’s nightclub. The interview was with Chuck D who held forth about all things hip hop, it’s roots, the Black Panthers and Malcolm X. After a walkabout on the Bowery with Chuck D, Eric B showed up at the Def Jam offices and insisted on waiting for Rakim who never showed up. LL Cool J dropped in flashing his new gold chain but went quiet when he saw the amount of bling sported by Eric B, as documented by the photograph. For the photo, Lawrence took them outside on to the Bowery, perched them on the fire hydrant whilst traffic rolled by, with on-lookers shouting “Yo Chuck, Whassup?!”
